Biography:

Currently the Organist/Music Director of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Oak Bay, Curt Bergen has been active as an organist, choral director, piano/organ accompanist and piano teacher in Victoria for over thirty-five years.

After obtaining an A.R.T.C. in piano performance and a summer of piano study in piano performance with Dr. Willard Schultz and master classes with Marek Jablonski at the Banff Centre Curt continued his piano studies at the University of Manitoba. He graduated in 1980 with a B.Mus. from the University of Victoria where he majored in organ under Edward Norman. While there he also studied piano accompaniment with Anne Crose-Schilperoot. Further music studies in Louisville Kentucky resulted in Curt receiving a Master of Church Music (M.C.M.) in organ and church music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville Kentucky where he studied organ with Dr. Marion Boyd Jones and piano pedagogy with Dr. Maurice Hinson, a prominent name in piano pedagogy circles. Other studies included master classes and coaching with Harold Vogel at the Oberlin Summer Organ Institute.

In 1999 Curt founded the Madrona Chamber Choir which specialized in Renaissance and Baroque choral works. Curt has accompanied many community choirs in Victoria over the years and most recently has been appointed as accompanist/assistant director of the newly formed Mendelssohn Choir. Curt continues to have an undimmed passion for teaching the piano to all ages from young children to seniors, and to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. With his wonderful wife Elizabeth Curt has resided in Oak bay for almost 30 years. They have two daughters, Rachel and Naomi, one dog, and two cats in their lively household!
